an otherwise unexplained photo of a hospital room decorated for christmas. there's a little christmas tree with a bunch of ugly ornaments, paper snowflakes hanging from the ceiling, and amidst the holly jolly mess, there's zoro's comatose body with reindeer antlers and a red rudolph nose
[Look, last month in general has been an extremely busy and tired blur for Aizawa--small blessings that most of the busyness was on account of Normal life obligations in November, too, nothing Retrospec-related the way October's series of preoccupying disasters had been. December hasn't treated him much more kindly either, so far, between the end of classes for the term fast approaching and his Mystery Eye Affliction starting to act up. Combined with the fact that Aizawa isn't a terribly social person on good days, and well...sometimes things fall through the cracks. Like the fact that he hasn't seen a certain acquaintance in a little while.
So no, it's true, he doesn't actually know Zoro's in a coma. And nobody's actually told him as much yet--until now, anyway.

Things you don't expect to find on your phone when you're just going about your day minding your own business: a picture, unprompted, of somebody you know in a room that you don't know. Christmas cheer practically drips off the image. Zoro is...asleep? Aizawa stops short, and spends a decent few seconds squinting at his phone, ignoring the stares passerby are making at the expression on his face.
There's no context here, but there is a sender's name attached to the image, and so Aizawa thinks he can glean together exactly what's going on here. At length:]
Thanks? I don't remember ever asking for this, exactly, but I suppose I'll go ahead and save it for future potential blackmailing anyhow. [Is he being sarcastic or is he dead serious...this text won't tell!! More importantly, though--] How long did it take him to attempt murdering you after waking up with all that on him?
[RING RING RING this is a video call now - and Baren is shamelessly Facetiming Aizawa from the hospital. Since now that there's sound and a more complete shot of the surroundings, the soft whirr of machines can probably be heard even behind Baren's voice.]

But honestly even all that doesn't really get much of a reaction until the literal face-shove--hard enough to dislodge that stupid nose, yes, but apparently still not nearly hard enough to....

Comatose. [Repeated slowly at first, and then Aizawa blinks as the meaning actually, properly sinks in. Dubious squinting turns into a frown as he really, actually looks at the entire image on the screen for the first time.] Why didn't you just say that to start with? --Wait, and when was this, what happened?
[and he'll shrug as he replaces the reindeer nose back on. that's very important to zoro's full ensemble?? don't mind baren he's just gonna nudge zoro over until there's enough room for zoro to just sit on the bed with him.]
